What is an electrical emergency?
An electrical issue is an emergency when it presents a credible risk of fire, shock, injury, or rapidly worsening property damage. Sparking, smoke, a burning smell, unusual heat at electrical equipment, exposed live wiring, or power behaving unpredictably around water all warrant immediate caution and a phone call.
What should I do first?
Keep people away from the affected area. Call 911 for fire, smoke, injury, or immediate life danger. Do not open a panel, remove an outlet cover, touch exposed wiring, or operate equipment that is hot, wet, sparking, or damaged. Call an electrician and describe only what you can observe safely.
What details help during the call?
Share the property address, what changed, where the warning sign appears, whether power is fully or partly out, and whether there is smoke, odor, heat, water, or visible damage. An electrician still needs to evaluate the property rather than diagnose it from a website description.
